Wine Description
Frame Center Barbera
A fabulous dinner wine, as it goes with so many meals!Carefully bridging the gap between Old World and the New, Barbera was the first red grape planted at Rosa d’Oro. It can ripen quite late and careful cultivation and cropping is a must. It may also be the ultimate food-pairing wine. With its vibrant freshness our Barbera has round yet bright plum fruit front and center with red and black berries, pomegranate, sage and a hint of violet in the low tannin, spicy and clean peppery finish. It features low oak and modest alcohol to allow the grape to speak for itself.Barbera is perfect with most pasta dishes, pizza, many tapas, Mexican food and much French bistro fare.
Frame Center Montepulciano

Think of Montepulciano as the Malbec of Abruzzo – dark, dense and rich with savory tones and weighty texture.

Late-ripening Montepulciano is widely grown throughout Central and Southern Italy where heat is necessary, but somehow it is incredibly rare here in warm California. It produces a relatively soft wine by Italian standards, weighty and dark but with modest acidity and gentle tannins. Our California version features rich plum and dark berry fruits, a foundation of brambly earth and a dose of espresso and a hint of violets with just enough acid to balance the lush yet dry palate. It clearly holds the best of the Old World in a slightly more fruit-driven California context.

Pair with lamb, mushroom or eggplant dishes, whole grains, Oaxacan mole, and cassoulet.

Frame Center Primitivo

Primitivo is the Italian Zinfandel grown in the area of Puglia in Southern Italy. Though they are genetically identical, Primitivo is considered to have more earthy undertones. The characteristic red raspberry, chocolate and black pepper-with-plum characteristics are apparent with a little rose petal and savory earthiness. The palate features a bit of powdery tannin and low acid that is balanced with a long finish. Though it is ready to drink now it will age gracefully for at least 5 years.

Recommended pairings: most medium-weight dishes. Pizza, roasted chicken, low-spice Mexican food, and Chinese beef dishes.

Frame Center  Sangiovese

Best known as the Chianti grape, Sangiovese offers outstanding complexity in a medium weight package.

Sporting the classic Sangiovese mix of light strawberry and pepper with black cherry, plum and cranberry, the Rosa d’Oro Sangiovese features a subtle yet grippy medium-weight palate with moderate acidity and earthy undertones. Made without new oak in the classic Tuscan model it is both accessible in its modest, textured style and shows great purity and depth that showcases Lake County’s high elevation potential with this noble grape.

Pair with roasted chicken and pork, braised tomato pastas, mushroom dishes and cheesy polenta.

Frame Center Aglianico

Known as the Cabernet of Basilicata, Rosa d’Oro’s estate Aglianico is a big, dark and complex wine for serious dining and friends.

The estate Aglianico bridges the gap between Old and New World wine with Lake County closely matching the grape’s home terroir in Southern Italy. Savory red cherry and deep black fruit are backed by dark spice, firm tannin and acid, with minerality and classic undertones of graphite, iron, mint, herb and earth. Rustic yet refined, totally varietally correct, and very food friendly with a robust meal that can match it. Potential aging 10+ years, improving all the while.

Enjoy with complex fall and winter braises, oxtail, game meats, lamb and deeply layered rich dishes.

Frame Center Sweet Dolcetto

Dolcetto is a Piemontese grape with a confusing name because it is usually a very dry and rustic red wine. Rosa d’Oro’s take on this is to produce a semi-sweet red wine from it with 3% residual sugar (1/3 the sweetness of a true Port), just enough to balance without being cloying or heavy.

Dolcetto is the third most popular red grape in Piedmont, Italy, yet it is rarely grown in California. It maintains the firm and grippy, rustic tannin and clean dark red fruit with spice notes that the grape is famous for, but it is tempered with a slight bit of sweetness. It can seem large at first but is decidedly medium weight and flexible in its food friendliness, having both structure and softness. Here it is at its best without any hint of oak at all.

Recommended pairings: hearty braised red meats with roasted vegetables, barbecued and smoked foods with sweet sauces, and charcuterie.

Frame Center Nebbiolo
Rosa d’Oro’s 2012 Nebbiolo focuses on the prettier, more aromatic side of the grape. Think of it as their answer to Russian River Pinot Noir.Nebbiolo is the trickiest of grapes, both in the vineyard and in the winery. With this vintage, they focused on the lighter and graceful side of this challenging equation. Bright red fruits ranging from strawberry to crushed raspberry and cranberry provide the foundation, but the nose is an explosive potpourri of tulips, lavender, rose petals and cinnamon. The tannin has been tamed and Nebbiolo’s famous searing acid is in remission due to the warm year and lengthy harvest season, yielding a truly enjoyable wine with delicate balance that requires zero aging before drinking. Enjoy just as you would a Russian River Pinot Noir.Recommended pairings: sautéed duck, roasted salmon, mushrooms, simple pork or pasta preparations.

Frame Center Refosco

Think of Refosco as Friuli’s answer to Petite Sirah, dark and full with extra aromatic complexity.

Native to the Friuli region in Northeastern Italy, the unique Refosco grape produces a rich, dark wine that is full bodied with deep plum flavors and a round texture underscored by notes of earth and licorice. Grown in warmer California climates it is textured with soft acid yet full of dark flavor and subtle pepper and spice with a lingering finish. Rosa d’Oro keeps theirs low in oak to maintain the delicate varietal nuance.

Only 3 barrels made. 66% Yolo County, 34% Estate grown. Unfined and unfiltered.
