Monforte Cheese & Wine Pairings, Part I

Matches Made in … Stratford!

Last week, I visited Ruth and Daniel at the Monforte Dairy in Stratford, Ontario and they were kind enough to sit with me and identify a number of pairings with their beautiful cheeses and dairy products.

About Monforte Dairy

Monforte Dairy is owned and operated by Ruth Klahsen and her children help her with the business.  They’ve been based in Stratford for several years and has a simple objective:  make great cheese.

Their passion and love of cheese helps them fulfill these goals no problem.

They also have a unique value proposition for anyone interested in getting their cheese and supporting their business: a subscription model. We encourage everyone to check it, especially if you’re a restaurant owner or foodie that’s into great, local product.

If you’re in London and you want to try their product, you can buy it on Saturdays in the open market at Covent Garden or you can pick some up at Glenda’s (Smith Cheese Inc) in the market any time of year.

About the Tastings

I brought 6 bottles of wine to try with Ruth and Daniel.  From whites, we had the Berganorio (my second last bottle) and Rasenna from Le Velette and the Sauvignon Blanc from Zantho.  For reds, I had the St Laurent from Zantho (soon to be listed with the LCBO) and Rosso di Spicca and Accordo from Le Velette.

What follows is a summary of the tastings.

Summary of Tasting

I had a wonderful morning meeting Ruth and her crew and definitely look forward to many more tastings and showcasing her product with ours.

Generally, all of the cheeses that Daniel picked worked well with the whites, but some were clear favourites from the group, all of which I’ve tried to highlight above.

Later, I’ll post a follow-up piece on this article focusing on the reds that I brought.
